Second Exam Starts! Everyone Around Us is an Enemy
This aired as part of a 45 min special introducing the second season of Naruto. It now appears that instead of the entire special being episode 26, the 45 min consisted of eps 26 & 27, if that makes sense. ###########################################
Naruto makes fun of Anko for bringing them to the Forest of Death. Not taking Naruto’s comments lightly, she pulls a shuriken and threatens Naruto, clipping the clothes of another ninja in the process. That serpent-tongued ninja interrupts her reprimands to hand her back her shuriken. Soon, Anko hands out consent forms, as some may die during this exam. The 2nd exam is a survival exam in the 44th training area, a circular region surrounded by 4 locked gate entrances dubbed the Forest of Death. There is a river, a forest, and in the middle is a tower within the area. The area is also infested with vicious monsters and poisonous plants. The exam consists of a competition over two scrolls - the scroll of heaven and scroll of earth - which are evenly split among 26 teams. Each team receives either a scroll of heaven or a scroll of earth. To pass, a team must bring both scrolls to the tower within 5 days. That means at least half (at least 13 teams) won’t pass. To make matters worse, if a scroll is destroyed within the 5 days, the number of successful teams will drop as well. Also, because the exam is taken in teams, if any team looses a teammate, that team will fail. Once the consent form is signed, no one is allowed to give up during the 5 days of the exam. The main rules are as follows:
- a team that cannot bring both scrolls to the tower with the tree teammates will fail.
- any team that looses a teammate or produces an unrecoverable teammate will fail
- teams are not allowed to look inside scrolls until they reach the tower
Anko explains that this test is to determine reliability. Everyone will begin at same time. Sasuke sits contemplating the consent form. Because no one knows which team has which type of scroll, they may have to kill each other if necessary to acquire the correct information. The exam begins. Hinata performs her Bakugan to use xray vision to see everything for up to several miles. They find a team almost immediately and claim their scroll. Meanwhile, the different Genin are taking on various strategies to prepare themselves for their upcoming battles. A team of Hidden Rain ninjas are attacked by killer bugs. The leeches in Konoha are able to detect perspiration and body temperature and jump onto their target in groups. If they suck a person’s blood for 5 min, that person will die. Naruto and team hang out and bide their time. At one point, Naruto goes off to pee. When he returns, Sasuke immediately attacks him. Several aspects of Naruto are different, so Sasuke suspects an imposter. A Hidden Rain nin named Mubi transforms and starts to fight them.
